The San Francisco 49ers announced several roster moves on Monday as they prepare for their preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. While the team added five players, it's the departures that are generating the most conversation among reporters and fans.

The 49ers released veteran kicker Greg Joseph, who was signed this offseason to compete with Jake Moody. Training camp reports suggested the competition was close, but Joseph's release strongly indicates that Moody has secured the job, ending speculation about who will handle kicking duties this season.


Statistically, Joseph was in a slight lead in the kicker competition. Throughout training camp, he was 22-of-24 on field goal attempts, while Moody was 21-of-24 entering Monday's practice.

The team also waived four players—quarterback Tanner Mordecai, wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, tight end Mason Pline, and cornerback Tre Avery.

Mordecai had been competing with recently signed Carter Bradley—the son of 49ers assistant head coach Gus Bradley—for the third quarterback spot behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones.

Neyor, an undrafted free agent, had drawn intrigue during offseason workouts, while Pline was battling for a place among the tight end group.

Some of these players could return after Saturday's preseason matchup, depending on injuries and roster needs. For now, these moves signal potential clarity in key roster battles—particularly at kicker and quarterback.
