As the 53-man roster cutdown approached, Purdy had no idea where he stood.
"For me, I had no idea," Purdy said on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast. "No one said anything to me. I was just trying to get a feel through my teammates and stuff. But all that, honestly, didn't matter. What mattered was me going out the next play and doing it again."
As the 49ers began making final cuts, players who didn't make the roster were called in to meet with head coach Kyle Shanahan, who personally delivered the news. When Shanahan walked into the quarterback room and asked to speak with Purdy, the rookie assumed the worst.
"We're in the quarterback room, and then Kyle opened up the door," Purdy recalled. "He goes, 'Hey, Brock, can you grab your stuff and come talk to me?' I was like, 'Bro.' I was like, 'Am I getting cut?' I was like, 'Dang, dude.'"
Turns out, Shanahan was having a little fun at his rookie's expense.
"And then he goes, 'No, I'm kidding. Set your stuff down,'" Purdy said. "He's like, 'Congrats, bro,' and then dapped me up."
Purdy added, "I was like, dude, my heart was pounding."
Since then, things have worked out remarkably well for Purdy. After injuries to Lance and Garoppolo, he stepped in as the starter and never looked back, leading the 49ers to two straight NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance.
This offseason, Purdy signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension, solidifying his role as San Francisco's franchise quarterback for years to come.
