Pro Football Focus contributor Dalton Wasserman recently examined every NFL team and identified one reason for optimism for each heading into the 2025 season. When it comes to the 49ers, he believes improved health could be the key to a dramatic turnaround.
"One of many reasons the 49ers missed the postseason last season was a slew of injuries to their star players," Wasserman explained. "Only four of their offensive starters played in all 17 games last season. Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk both played fewer than 400 snaps. Trent Williams didn't play after Week 11. The defensive line was decimated by the end of the season, as well."
The 49ers ended the year with 17 players on injured reserve. In addition to Williams, McCaffrey, and Aiyuk, the list included linebacker Dre Greenlaw and running back Jordan Mason, neither of whom remains with the team.
While the team has undergone a notable roster overhaul this offseason, the top-end talent remains strong. Staying healthy could be enough to keep the 49ers competitive in 2025.
"San Francisco should see improvement simply due to their star players returning to full strength," Wasserman added.
The 49ers conclude their offseason program this week and appear to be in relatively good health heading into the break before training camp. McCaffrey's return from his injury-plagued 2024 season is a significant boost for the offense, while Aiyuk's eventual comeback from ACL and MCL tears, expected to extend into the regular season, will be another crucial piece of the puzzle.
