Not long after, Purdy received FaceTime calls from 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, who were together on a boat in the Pacific Ocean.
"[49ers owner] Jed [York] takes kind of our senior leadership on a retreat to Cabo [San Lucas] each year with our wives," Lynch shared Friday morning on Bay Area radio station KNBR. "And we happened to be down there when the deal got consummated. [VP of football administration] Brian Hampton, from our place, did a tremendous job working with Kyle Strongin (Purdy's agent), and bringing that deal home.
"And I knew, that day, checked in with Hamp, as we call him, and Hamp felt like we had a good chance to close it. We actually had gone out on a boat in Cabo, and so we were out there. Fortunately, we had service, and found out. I talked to his agent first and said, 'Hey, we're good to go. Congratulations. Thank you.'"
Lynch then FaceTimed his now very well-compensated quarterback, unaware that Purdy was mid-round at one of the Bay Area's most exclusive courses.
"We're on a boat. We happen to have Kyle, myself, Jed, [EVP of football operations] Paraag [Marathe], [president] Al Guido," Lynch shared. "Everybody was on this boat, and there's Brock and his wife out on Olympic Club, and a pretty good setting to celebrate over a FaceTime."
Lynch joked that he hopes Purdy didn't get in trouble with the golf club for taking the call on the course.
"Hopefully, Olympic Club understands that that was a big deal for the Purdy family. Excuse the FaceTime," Lynch added.
On Thursday, Shanahan shared his account of the interaction, adding that he doesn't expect the newfound wealth to change his quarterback.
"I called him from a boat on Saturday or Sunday—whenever that was—just to congratulate him," Shanahan said. "And we just messed around with each other for a couple minutes and I haven't talked to him about it since. So, when I see him in person, it's not something we think about.
"It was just that day, it was congratulations. And Brock, he's been the same since day one. You like to say that about a lot of people, and we're never lying up here or anything, but Brock is as much like that as, not just any football player I've met, but any person I've met."
