Quarterback Brock Purdy is expected to receive a massive contract extension—likely the largest in franchise history—positioning him among the NFL's highest-paid players.
"If you're going to hand your quarterback a lucrative contract, it would also be wise to shore up the protection in front of him," Cameron wrote. "While the 49ers have taken a few stabs at solidifying the interior this offseason, more veteran depth would go a long way."
The 49ers lost starting left guard Aaron Banks in free agency and plan to hold a competition for the job. PFF appears to view Ben Bartch as the current frontrunner, but he'll face competition from Nick Zakelj, Matt Hennessy, Spencer Burford, and rookie Connor Colby.
Cameron highlighted one veteran lineman who could provide valuable depth and experience—former Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings guard Dalton Risner.
"Dalton Risner would profile as a positive addition, given his experience and grading profile as a pass blocker, having earned a 76.1 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2024."
Risner has experience at both guard positions, playing exclusively on the left side during his first five NFL seasons before transitioning to the right in 2024. Over the past two seasons, he has allowed just one sack, though he did spend time on injured reserve last year.
