After emerging as one of the NFL's biggest bargains over the past few seasons, most expect Purdy to finally cash in.
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua weighed in on the 49ers quarterback during an appearance on Julian Edelman's Games with Names podcast, sharing his thoughts on Purdy's upcoming contract negotiations.
When asked if Purdy could secure a deal worth more than $50 million annually, Nacua replied without hesitation, "I don't think so."
Instead, the Rams wideout projected Purdy's next deal would fall in the $40 million range. When asked if that figure might land on the higher end of that spectrum, Nacua said, "No. I think mid-[$40 million]."
That's not to say Nacua is downplaying Purdy's value. He praised the 49ers quarterback as a "smart guy" who likely understands that commanding a top-of-market salary could hinder San Francisco's ability to retain key playmakers—an issue already coming into play this offseason. The 49ers were forced to part with several core contributors in anticipation of having to pay their franchise quarterback.
"They have a chance to still be in their window," Nacua explained. "And I think if he goes for [an annual salary starting with] a five, that the window closes."
The 49ers would undoubtedly welcome the chance to keep Purdy for less than $50 million annually, especially if the deal settles in the mid-$40 million range. Even at that number, Purdy would become one of the league's highest-paid players, earning significantly more than he has on his rookie contract as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
While Purdy posted a record-breaking season in 2023 with 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, his production declined in 2024 amid a rash of team injuries. Last season, he threw for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as the 49ers finished with a disappointing 6-11 record.
All eyes remain on Brock Purdy and his contract negotiations with the 49ers during a pivotal offseason for the team. Players are set to report for the start of the offseason program next week, just days before the 2025 NFL Draft.
H/t to Joaquin Ruiz of NBC Sports Bay Area for the find.
