Saints quarterback Derek Carr is reportedly dealing with a shoulder injury that could threaten his availability for the 2025 season. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Carr is weighing his options, including possibly undergoing surgery.
The Saints recently restructured Carr's contract in a way that seemingly locked the quarterback to the team for the 2025 season.
Carr's 2024 season ended prematurely due to a fracture in his non-throwing hand. This new development could be disastrous for the Saints, potentially pushing them to prioritize a quarterback earlier than expected in the draft. Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener, and Ben DiNucci are the other quarterbacks on New Orleans' roster, none of whom are likely seen as viable starting options.
If the Saints do select a quarterback at No. 9, it could push another top non-quarterback prospect down the board—giving the 49ers even more attractive options at No. 11. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan would undoubtedly welcome that scenario.
Of course, a high-end prospect slipping could also present an opportunity to trade back and accumulate additional draft capital. While the 49ers currently hold 11 picks, they may look to add more as they work to replenish their roster following an offseason exodus of key contributors.
That No. 9 slot, just two picks ahead of San Francisco, has suddenly become one of the most intriguing spots in the draft and could play a significant role in shaping what the 49ers do with their first-round pick.
