Melo initially shared the news in a social media post about the Big 12 Pro Day. After reaching out for clarification, Melo confirmed that the interview with Etienne was separate from that event, taking place earlier this week.
The 49ers could use an immediate upgrade at right tackle, where Colton McKivitz is once again slated to start. However, the team is also planning for the future, with left tackle Trent Williams set to turn 37 before the start of the 2025 season.
Etienne has 38 games of experience over four collegiate seasons. He spent 2021 and 2022 at Oklahoma State before transferring to BYU in 2023.
At the Big 12 Pro Day, Etienne measured 6-foot-7 and weighed 329 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.96 to 4.97-second range, recorded a 30-inch vertical jump, and posted a broad jump of nine feet, six inches.
While Etienne primarily played left tackle in three of his four collegiate seasons, he logged 239 snaps at right tackle and 64 at right guard in 2023, according to Pro Football Focus.
