San Francisco could be looking to bolster its depth behind George Kittle this offseason. The team has long sought a complementary piece for the All-Pro tight end, who continues to build an impressive Hall-of-Fame-worthy career.
Kittle topped 1,000 receiving yards for the fourth time last season, finishing with 1,106 yards—his second-highest total behind his 1,377 yards in 2018.
Beyond easing Kittle's workload, the 49ers may also be thinking long-term. The star tight end turns 32 in October, making it wise to start planning for the future.
Two respected 49ers insiders—Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area and Matt Barrows of The Athletic—have projected Penn State tight end Tyler Warren to San Francisco in recent mock drafts, underlining the team's need at the position.
"Yes, the 49ers might have bigger needs on the offensive and defensive lines," Maiocco noted. "But there is not another game-changer they can take here that compares to the ultra-versatile Warren."
The last time the 49ers selected a tight end in the draft was 2023, when they picked two—Cameron Latu in the third round and Brayden Willis in the seventh. Latu is no longer on the roster, and Willis has played just 73 offensive snaps in two seasons, leaving the door open for an addition.
Cornerback help
The 49ers reportedly also met with several cornerback prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine, including:
- CB Brandon Adams, UCF
- CB Zy Alexander, LSU
- CB Cobee Bryant, Kansas
- CB Max Hairston, Kentucky
- CB Tommi Hill, Nebraska
- CB Will Johnson, Michigan
- CB Jacob Parrish, Kansas State
- CB Quincy Riley, Louisville
Unless the 49ers make a surprising move in free agency, cornerback remains a major need heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. With starter Charvarius Ward expected to depart in free agency, the team currently has Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, and Tre Avery as the only cornerbacks under contract for the upcoming season.
Will Johnson, the No. 3-ranked cornerback on Pro Football Focus' big board, could be an intriguing option for San Francisco if he falls to them at No. 11 in the draft.
