Barrows doesn't expect Purdy to surpass the NFL's richest contract—currently held by Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott at $60 million per year—but he believes it will come close. He predicts Purdy and the 49ers will settle on an extension averaging $57.5 million annually.
"The reason I've come up with that number is I think Jared Goff's was 55," Barrows explained on the 49ers +/- podcast.
According to OverTheCap.com, Goff actually averages $53 million per year. However, three quarterbacks—Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love, and Joe Burrow—earn $55 million annually. Tua Tagovailoa sits just above Goff at $53.1 million.
"And so you factor for inflation, you factor for the rise in the salary cap this year versus whenever Golf did his deal, that's the number you wind up with," Barrows continued. "I just can't see the agent settling for anything less than what some of these other guys got.
"I don't think it's going to be a Dak Prescott number, but that tier seems [realistic]."
Meanwhile, Barrows' co-host, Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, predicts a lower figure, believing the 49ers have more leverage in negotiations than the Cowboys did with Prescott. He projects Purdy's deal will slightly exceed Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' $51 million annual salary.
Kawakami envisions Purdy topping that number by $1 million annually, landing at $52 million annually on a four-year deal with higher guarantees.
"I don't see the 49ers going into anywhere near Dak Prescott [money]," Kawakami added.
