Earlier that day, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo offered high praise for the 49ers' third-year quarterback. With the two teams set to face off on Sunday at Levi's Stadium—their first meeting since February's Super Bowl—Spagnuolo has once again been studying Purdy closely.
When asked about the challenge of facing the 49ers' offense, Spagnuolo said, "It's going to start up front and stopping the run, and hopefully, we can get the quarterback not to be in timing like he is because I can't find a weakness in this quarterback. Every time I put the film on, I'm more and more impressed."
Purdy humbly disagreed with the glowing assessment when told of Spagnuolo's remarks.
"I think I've definitely got stuff to work on and get better at," Purdy said. "I appreciate the comments, but in the NFL, there's always something to get better at. And as a quarterback, too, you can never be perfect. There's always something. So I appreciate it, but yeah, I got to get better, too."
Purdy was also asked about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best at the position and one of the faces of the NFL. How does Purdy, a rising star himself, compare to the Chiefs' superstar?
"Obviously, for what he's done, and obviously, the Super Bowls that he's won, and just what he's done in the NFL with his plays and his style of play, it's really fun to watch," Purdy acknowledged. "But do I compare myself to him or anything like that? No, I don't compare myself to any other quarterbacks in the NFL. I am who I am, and I'm trying to win for the 49ers and play my style of ball.
"But obviously, I tip my cap to him, and he's done a tremendous job. He's definitely on the way up to being one of the greats in the NFL as a quarterback, and that's no secret. And so, whenever you get a chance to go up against a guy like that on the other sideline, it's always fun."
