Saleh joined the Jets in 2021 after helping transform the 49ers' defense into one of the league's elite units during his four-year tenure as their defensive coordinator. He played a crucial role in helping the 49ers reach the Super Bowl during the 2019 season.
Meanwhile, the current 49ers defense, under new coordinator Nick Sorensen, has yet to reach its full potential, ranking 12th in total yards allowed, 13th in passing yards allowed, 11th in rushing yards allowed, and 15th in points allowed. The team's 2-3 start has left fans wondering if Saleh might return to his old role.
Despite fan speculation, Saleh has no plans to rejoin any team this season. As Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reports, Saleh intends to take some time off, spend time with his family, and prepare for the next hiring cycle when he is likely to be in high demand as a defensive coordinator.
Silver added, "He has no plans to join anyone's staff during the 2024 season, should an opportunity arise."
This stance means Saleh's return to Santa Clara is unlikely this season. However, if the 49ers' defensive struggles continue and the team opts to part ways with its second defensive coordinator in as many years, the door may open for Saleh to consider a reunion in the future.
