Pearsall is attempting to return after being shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco on August 31. He remains on the non-football injury (NFI) list.
When asked about the decision not to open Pearsall's practice window, Shanahan explained, "Just because we're not going to practice or anything."
The 49ers have a short week ahead. They have only a light practice and a walk-through scheduled before their Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Yetur Gross-Matos out 4-8 weeks
Surprisingly, the 49ers placed defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos on injured reserve on Saturday, sidelining him for at least four games. According to Shanahan, the offseason acquisition will miss significant time following knee surgery.
"I think he got his surgery Friday, and they told me anywhere like four to eight weeks, is there estimate on it," Shanahan said. "And so, it's a pretty big estimate, but four on the short side, eight on the long. ... It was the same injury that he had in the last preseason game. We thought giving it a long rest would be able to help it. It did for a little bit.
"But then, the more he started playing and started aggravating it again, it just became too painful. So, had to make the choice to get surgery, and I think it was a good decision."
No update on McCaffrey
Shanahan had no update on running back Christian McCaffrey, who is still rehabbing calf and Achilles tendinitis issues. The coach simply noted that McCaffrey is doing what's needed as his rehab gradually ramps up.
Other updates
Shanahan spoke to reporters before the team had final confirmation on injuries from Sunday's game but reiterated much of what was shared following the loss. This includes the following:
- Safety Talanoa Hufanga is dealing with a wrist injury.
- Kicker Jake Moody suffered a high-ankle sprain.
Moody is expected to miss significant time. The team is bringing in four kickers for tryouts on Monday. However, Shanahan didn't have their names yet, noting that the front office is still finalizing the details.
Shanahan also provided the following updates on players who missed Sunday's game:
- Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is unlikely to play against the Seahawks due to a calf injury.
- Wide receiver Jacob Cowing is considered day-to-day with a shoulder injury.
- Wide receiver Chris Conley remains day-to-day with an oblique injury.
