The truth is, power rankings mean very little at this stage in the offseason. Yes, free agency has come and gone, but NFL rosters are about to undergo further changes this week, with the 2024 NFL Draft slated for Thursday.
Pro Football Focus' Amelia Probst posted a power ranking based on the analytics site's data on each roster and the offseason roster moves made so far. The San Francisco 49ers came in at No. 2, behind only the Kansas City Chiefs.
Probst lists defensive tackle Arik Armstead as the 49ers' biggest loss. Interestingly, she lists quarterback Joshua Dobbs as the biggest gain.
"The loss of Arik Armstead will be felt, as the longtime 49er earned a solid 81.9 PFF grade last season," Probst explained. "The 49ers put up the highest team pass-rush grade in the NFL last year, and though they may have let Chase Young walk, they added Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos."
While Armstead was a valuable contributor when he was on the football field, the defensive tackle missed 13 games over the past two seasons, forcing the 49ers to reevaluate his salary. When the two sides couldn't agree on a restructured deal, they parted ways, allowing Armstead to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Dobbs will likely serve as starter Brock Purdy's backup. The 49ers are his fourth team since last offseason. Dobbs understands his role with the team and hopes to do whatever is necessary to contribute to a championship run.
"It's been really cool to see what [Brock Purdy has] been doing," Dobbs recently stated. "So, however I can contribute to the room, that's my mindset and that's my mentality. So I'm excited, man."
