With the team expected to have limited salary cap space, the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft gains even more importance. General manager John Lynch and company look to restock their roster with affordable rookies while striving to retain their core of superstar players.
The 49ers' first selection will be the No. 31 overall pick in the first round, one of the 11 selections the team is expected to own. However, this depends on the compensatory picks the NFL will allocate this month. San Francisco is anticipated to be awarded the maximum number of additional picks—four.
According to team reporter Lindsey Pallares, the complete list of draft picks the 49ers are projected to own in next month's draft is as follows:
- Round 1, Pick 31 Overall
- Round 2, Pick 63 Overall
- Round 3, Pick 94 Overall
- Round 3, Pick 99 Overall (Compensatory)
- Round 4, Pick 125 Overall (via Cowboys)
- Round 4, Pick 132 Overall
- Round 5, Pick 176 Overall (Compensatory)
- Round 6, Pick 214 Overall (Compensatory)
- Round 6, Pick 216 Overall (Compensatory)
- Round 7, Pick 234 Overall (via Broncos)
- Round 7, Pick 253 Overall
OverTheCap.com recently explained the compensatory pick projection, indicating that the 49ers are expected to receive a third-round selection for the departure of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, a fifth-round pick for the departure of defensive end Samson Ebukam, and sixth-round picks for safety Jimmie Ward and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.
The fourth-round pick from the Dallas Cowboys was part of the Trey Lance trade, while the seventh-round pick from the Denver Broncos was part of the deal to acquire defensive end Randy Gregory this past season. The Broncos acquired the 49ers' sixth-round draft pick as part of that trade.
San Francisco's fifth-round draft pick was traded to the Carolina Panthers as part of the deal for running back Christian McCaffrey.
