Now the team's fanbase, known as "the Faithful," is breaking records in merchandise sales. According to Joe Pompliano, of Huddle Up, a newsletter that breaks down the business and money behind sports, "The San Francisco 49ers have done $25 million in merchandise sales over the last two weeks, including 100,000 jerseys sold since the end of the regular season — an NFL record."
As you might imagine, a report like this brings out the haters, including a Philadelphia Eagles fan, named Ben, who replied to Pompliano's post, "Bandwagon Niner fans appearing just in time to lose to big game. Love to see it." Multiple other fans had similar things to say. But we can only assume that those fans have not been paying attention, as the 49ers fanbase has been strong for decades.
Still, some will believe what they want to believe. But the facts are that the fans of the San Francisco 49ers support their team as well as any fanbase in all of sports. According to a CNN report, "Christian McCaffrey, Micah Parsons, and CeeDee Lamb spent the most weeks on the top-10 sales list, but Jalen Hurts' jersey occupied the number one spot most often."
The Dallas Cowboys always perform well in merchandise sales. But McCaffrey's number 23 jersey sold more than any other for the season. Brock Purdy's jersey consistently performed well throughout the season, too.
49ers fans were out in full force for the opening of Super Bowl week in Las Vegas, making sure to cheer their players while booing players from the Kansas City Chiefs. The Super Bowl itself is expected to be a much more balanced crowd, with both teams being well-represented by their fanbase. If the 49ers can perform at the level the fanbase is performing, San Francisco may very well bring home a sixth Lombardi trophy.
