According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, 49ers scouts recently met with Texas Tech cornerback Rayshad Williams at the Hula Bowl. He was one of three Red Raiders who accepted invites to the all-star game.
The 49ers could have their eye on Williams, who spent two seasons at UCLA before the past three at Texas Tech. At 6-foot-3, he would be the tallest defensive back on the team's roster.
San Francisco may look to bolster its defensive backfield in the upcoming NFL Draft. Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young recently identified this area as a potential weakness within an otherwise solid roster.
"There is some weakness in the secondary that shows up, and they can get beat. And it's been proven that way," Young said, referring to some elite quarterbacks who had success against the unit this season.
While the 49ers' run defense excelled, ranking third in the NFL this season, the pass defense landed in the middle of the pack at No. 14. One key player who stood out among the group is Charvarius Ward, who earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors for his efforts this season.
