"Gip ended up—I think we got it yesterday—he had a quad strain, so that could be anywhere seven to 10 days," Shanahan informed reporters. "So the odds—that can heal faster, too—but just with our situation, the odds aren't there."
The other 49ers players not expected to practice on Wednesday are defensive tackle Arik Armstead (foot, knee), running back Christian McCaffrey (calf), tight end Ross Dwelley (ankle), guard Jon Feliciano (back), cornerback Ambry Thomas (hand), and safety Ji'Ayir Brown (knee).
Regarding Feliciano's status, Shanahan said, "New thing came up, but we feel pretty good about it, so we'll just see how the week goes out."
Running back Elijah Mitchell is dealing with an illness and will also be absent from practice.
Shanahan further announced that quarterback Sam Darnold will start against the Rams, allowing for some rest for the 49ers' all-time single-season passing leader, Brock Purdy.
