Earlier today, ESPN reported that San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was expected to be fined for the tackle on wide receiver DeVonta Smith in last weekend's 42-19 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The tackle led to the much-discussed sideline scrum between the 49ers linebacker and Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro.

Both Greenlaw and Dom DiSandro were ejected from the game.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the NFL fined Greenlaw $10,927 for his "body-slamming" tackle on Smith in the third quarter of last weekend's game, a consequence the linebacker had anticipated.


Additionally, 49ers linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles was fined $9,940 for unnecessary roughness. The fine resulted from the defender grabbing hold of an opponent's facemask during kick coverage in the third quarter, a play for which he was penalized.


"Dre is not a dirty player at all," head coach Kyle Shanahan said this week. "He plays one way, and that's why he was so frustrated because he is trying so hard not to break the rules. In his mind, he wasn't completely slamming a guy. His guy's three yards inbound, and he's trying his hardest to get him down. And everything he does is physical.

"And if you can see at the end, he tried to let up at the last second. It happened to be it was a lighter player, and Dre's pretty strong. Now, he should have been penalized for that. You can't slam a guy."

As expected, there are no further repercussions from the sideline incident involving DiSandro. At least, not for Greenlaw. DiSandro has reportedly been barred from the Eagles' sideline for this weekend's game against the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL is still reviewing additional material to see if further discipline against DiSandro or the Eagles is warranted.


Shanahan added, "I stick up for Dre that he was put in a situation from somebody that didn't have to do with the game. That's what bothered me."

Greenlaw and DiSandro have since apologized to each other through intermediaries.

"I really hate that it even escalated and went to that," Greenlaw said. "That's never something I have ever been a part of or seen in the game."
