The injury occurred during Sunday's 34-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, with the coach saying, "It wasn't like your normal tear. It was a little one that was high, and [he] complained about it all day. We sent him in (for an MRI), and it had a slight tear, and got a couple of opinions. They said it's only going to get worse, so we had to do the surgery."
Update: According to the NFL transaction wire, the 49ers officially placed Zakelj on the injured reserve list.
Right tackle Colton McKivitz, who is dealing with ankle and knee injuries, will practice on Wednesday, albeit as a limited participant.
Shanahan also confirmed that guard Aaron Banks has been ruled out for this weekend. Banks sustained a turf toe injury during the October 30 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 49ers are holding three practices ahead of Sunday's Week 11 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers are coming off a 20-6 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
