Social media has been buzzing since multiple reports declared Sam Darnold the winner of the QB2 job behind starter Brock Purdy. Those same reports stated that the 49ers were considering their options regarding Trey Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick. That includes potential trade scenarios.
Speculation soared further after Lance was nowhere to be seen during Wednesday's practice.
"Honestly, it's just like a cloud right now," Warner told reporters after the practice. "I'm not even sure. It was just weird seeing three guys out there. I didn't know where Trey was."
Warner didn't have any further insight into the situation. He's just as confused as the media and fanbase, who are seeking answers.
"I mean, honestly, I don't know much about the situation," Warner explained. "Complete honesty. I came out to practice, I saw there were only three quarterbacks out there. Trey's not out there. So, I'm trying to ask around to see what's going on, and there's not a clear answer right now.
"Obviously, love Trey. I don't know what's going on with him right now or what's going to be next, but, yeah, we just got to keep preparing, get ready."
Warner added, "There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that you honestly don't even know about. Obviously, there's a football part of it. There's a business part of it. There's things that you can't control and that you can control. My biggest thing is always controlling the controllables, doing what I can to be the best player, best teammate, best leader I can for our team."
As for the quarterback that did win the QB2 job, Warner did briefly discuss him.
"Sam's looked good," Warner said. "I really like how he's progressed. I think, obviously, being a veteran at the position, the arm talent is insane. Obviously, that's the reason why he was drafted as high as he was back [in 2018]. I think he's looked good. I think he's continued to get better every day."
