5 players to watch for on Day 2 of 49ers training camp

The San Francisco 49ers concluded Day 1 of training camp Wednesday, marking the first time that players were back on the field in over a month after the long layoff following mandatory minicamp in June.

While it was a light practice for the team, there were still several standouts, including an unexpected surprise on offense.

With that said, who should you keep an eye out for on Day 2?

Brock Purdy

You can't talk about the second day of training camp without mentioning Brock Purdy.

The 49ers' perceived starter at quarterback is making his return to practice after sustaining a torn UCL in San Francisco's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

After missing out on Day 1 Wednesday, Purdy is expected to take the first-team reps when on the field Thursday, meaning it'll be the first action he receives in 11-on-11 action.

Purdy's progress is the biggest unknown to the public, and we'll get the first sense of how it's unfolded when he steps in the field today.

Ty Davis-Price

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was surprised that Tyrion Davis-Price shined on Wednesday, arguably looking like the best running back on Day 1.

After a day of good downhill running and fluid movement, eyes will be on Davis-Price to see if he can develop a level of consistency or return to the habits that kept him off the field last season.

Drake Jackson

With no reported deal for Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson returns on Thursday as the top defensive end on the team.

Jackson has pressure on him to perform this season, as the 49ers lost both Charles Omenihu and Samson Ebukam to free agency without having a replacement, showcasing their confidence in the 2022 second-round pick.

He gets his first opportunities in a big window without Bosa to showcase his improvements on Thursday.

Jaylon Moore

Jaylon Moore is another player with pressure on him this offseason, but for a different reason, as he may be on the verge of getting without a strong training camp performance.

Well, Moore is getting that opportunity to be the first-team left tackle when Trent Williams doesn't work in team drills, and that could be the case again on Thursday.

He's going up against Drake Jackson and Clelin Ferrell with the first team. That'll be a battle to watch.

Jake Moody

A kicker usually wouldn't get on this list, but Jake Moody didn't attempt a single field goal on Day 1, as Zane Gonzalez kicked all three opportunities on the day.

With an unprecedented draft status, Moody will be relied upon, but first, it's important to evaluate how he can kick in practice. That'll hopefully come Thursday.
