49ers place star EDGE Nick Bosa on Reserve/Did Not Report List

The San Francisco 49ers placed star edge rusher Nick Bosa on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, after the 25-year-old was not present during the team's first practice of training camp Wednesday.

It wasn't an unexpected move, however, as general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan alluded to their star pass rusher likely being away from the team in lieu of his impending contract extension when speaking with the media on Tuesday.

"Everybody's reporting today," 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters Tuesday. "12:30 (p.m. PT) is our first kind of event as a team. That will be our conditioning test -- our tempo run as we call it. I've seen various players -- have not seen Nick. I would expect he's not here to start off."

While the new Collective Bargaining Agreement(CBA) prohibits players from holding out of training camp without being fined, the 49ers will not be fining Bosa, as a stipulation suggests that the team's fines can be waived due to Bosa playing under the fifth-year option, which is what Shanahan is trending to do.

"He's not getting fined $50,000 a day (because he's in the fifth-year option portion of his rookie contract)," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "So he's not in that same situation."

The 49ers aren't worried about getting a deal done for Bosa, but understand the complexity of such a significant contract, which will require some time to hammer out.

"We're working. We're having really good communication with Brian Ayrault," Lynch said. "He's got good, competent and people we have an immense amount of respect for working for him. And we're working diligently to try to come to an agreement. I think the challenges -- you're talking about a real special player. You're talking about one of the better players in the league. You could argue that could simplify things but I think at times it's just finding that sweet spot. We're committed to working towards that."

"We want all our players to be here," Lynch said. "We've got a pretty good track record of having our guys here and done with contracts. Like I said, this one may be perhaps a little more complex. No timelines there, but I can tell you that we're working hard. We have good communication, and we've got to keep doing that. The interest is mutual."

As of now, however, Bosa remains without a contract extension, and therefore, away from the team.

"He knows how valuable of a player he is, and he knows he'll be compensated for it," fellow defensive lineman Arik Armstead said on Wednesday. "So I don't think he has a worry in his mind, and I don't think we're here worried either. The Niners have a great track record of taking care of people who do things the right way and are exceptional players, and I'm sure that'll get taken care of, too. Definitely deserves it."
