Young has been with the self-proclaimed "Worldwide Leader in Sports" for over two decades and was part of the network's notable cost-cutting moves. NFL analysts Matt Hasselbeck and Todd McShay have also reportedly been let go.
Young has been a fixture in ESPN's NFL programming, including "NFL Countdown."
The job cuts come two months after ESPN signed Pat McAfee to a lucrative five-year, $85 million deal, bringing his popular online show to the network. The sports personality is the target of criticism on Friday, with many fans believing the massive deal contributed to the departure of so many others, like Young.
Young played quarterback in the NFL for 15 seasons and is best known for his time with the 49ers. He has been a part of three championship teams, most notably the 1994 squad in which he was a starter. Young is a two-time MVP, three-time first-team All-Pro, and seven-time Pro Bowl selection. The quarterback has led the NFL in passing touchdowns four times, passer rating six times, and completion percentage five times.
Young's No. 8 jersey with San Francisco is retired, and the quarterback remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
