The 49ers remain hopeful that Purdy can start practicing in late August. How much he'll practice is unknown, but the quarterback started very late last month, and his workload will continue to ramp up over the next two months.
There is also optimism that Purdy could be available to start Week 1 when the 49ers visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10, barring any setbacks.
"It's all been charted and planned," Schefter said Wednesday on the Pat McAfee Show. "Like, they have a whole game plan for him. And I don't know the specific game plan for the summer. I'm sure he won't be throwing every day. [It will be] whatever the doctors have prescribed to them in terms of what is necessary for that recovery.
"But they're optimistic ... optimistic, but don't know [for sure] that he'll be ready for opening day. But there's still a whole way to go. There's a whole plan that's in place. You know how these coaches plan out all their practices for all the training camp? Well, there's a Brock Purdy plan, too, probably, right? I don't know the specifics of it, but everything that he does is going to be closely monitored all summer long."
San Francisco made Purdy (6-1, 220) the last overall pick in last year's draft. The rookie sensation completed 114 of 170 attempts (67.1 percent) for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions through nine game appearances (five starts) with the 49ers last season.
Purdy also started the 49ers' three playoff games, completing 41 of 63 attempts for 569 yards and three touchdowns. Once healthy, he is expected to be San Francisco's starting quarterback, with Trey Lance or Sam Darnold serving as his backup.
