The signing comes after the 49ers lost former starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley in free agency. He signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Detroit Lions. The team also lost defensive back Jimmie Ward, who played most of his snaps at the nickel cornerback spot in 2022. He signed a two-year, $13 million deal with the Houston Texans.
Oliver played 262 of his 426 snaps in 2022 in the slot. The cornerback spent the first five games of the 2022 season on injured reserve after missing most of 2021 due to a season-ending ACL injury. Atlanta activated him on October 15, 2022.
The Falcons made Oliver (6-0, 210) a second-round selection (No. 58 overall) out of Colorado in 2018. He registered 37 tackles, three tackles for a loss, two quarterback hits, a sack, seven passes defensed, and an interception through 12 game appearances (five starts) with the Falcons last season, per Pro Football Reference.
Oliver's 77.9 overall Pro Football Focus grade in 2022 was a career-high. NFL quarterbacks earned a passer rating of 72.4 while targeting the Falcons cornerback. He did not give up a touchdown this past season.
Oliver, 26, has recorded 203 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, six quarterback hits, two sacks, 34 passes defensed, two interceptions, and three forced fumbles in 62 game appearances (38 starts) through his five NFL seasons.
