Mostert appeared in just nine games during his last two seasons with the 49ers. He played in just one game last season before opting to undergo season-ending knee surgery. In the last year of his deal, it was a decision he felt was best for his NFL future.
Apparently, the Niners weren't pleased with the decision.
"Mostert weighed all pros and all cons when he decided to sit out the season," wrote Tyler Dunne of Go Long. "He knew how much he was risking - the decision absolutely pissed the 49ers off - but he also knew how hard he would work."
The 49ers initially believed Mostert would miss eight weeks due to the knee injury. That was before the running back announced that he opted to undergo surgery, ending his season. That led to the emergence of then-rookie running back Elijah Mitchell, who ended up leading the team in rushing yards.
Upon hitting free agency, Mostert believes his former team used the decision against him.
"Yeah, they did," Mostert told Dunne. "They definitely did. I moved on from the situation. I have the opportunity to see them."
Before hosting Mostert, another former 49ers running back, Jeff Wilson Jr., and the Dolphins, the 49ers face the New Orleans Saints at Levi's Stadium this afternoon.
