Turner took time away from the 49ers to recover from knee surgeries that he underwent. The longtime running backs coach was always expected to return to the team in 2023.
"Bobby makes it very clear that he's coming back, and we make it very clear that he's always welcome," general manager John Lynch said in March. "He had a couple surgeries, he had one last year, and felt rushed with the rehab and wants to take care of it."
Anthony Lynn, who also owns the title of assistant head coach, has filled in as the 49ers' running backs coach in Turner's absence.
Maiocco notes that Turner is expected to "assist the offensive in some form," so it is unknown how involved the coach will be immediately upon his return.
Turner, 73, spent the past 27 years coaching NFL running backs, serving in that role with the 49ers from 2017 through 2021. Kyle Shanahan brought him over from the Atlanta Falcons upon being hired as San Francisco's head coach.
Turner also coached with the Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders, and Atlanta Falcons. He helped the Broncos to two Super Bowl championships (XXXII, XXXIII).
