Carter, who spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 before being released, worked out with the 49ers on Monday, along with fellow defensive linemen Robert Nkemdiche and Tomasi Laulile, and will now get a second workout with the team.
The 49ers signed Nkemdiche ahead of training camp earlier this week, then brought in Laulile after the release of Dee Ford on Thursday, once again bringing their total roster count to 90 players (the maximum).
If Carter does indeed sign with the 49ers after his second workout, there may be a corresponding cut by the organization. Currently, the 49ers have 17 defensive linemen, so it would likely be one of them should the second-year defensive lineman get a contract.
My early expectation would be veteran Alex Barrett, who has been the odd man out during San Francisco's four defensive line sets of four players during the first few days of practice. Barrett has primarily been seen on special teams sets at training camp.
Earlier on Thursday, head coach Kyle Shanahan did confirm that veteran defensive lineman Arik Armstead suffered an MCL sprain on the first day of practice, and will miss several weeks, which likely takes him out until Week 1. The 49ers signed Laulile a few afters after the Armstead news broke.
UPDATE: Kyle Shanahan announced on Saturday morning that defensive lineman Maurice Hurst tore his biceps during Friday's practice. He will miss the 2022 season.
I'd now expect the 49ers to sign Carter with the corresponding move placing Hurst on Injured Reserve, as that would free up a roster spot.
