Samuel, who is entering his fourth year in the NFL, has been in negotiations with San Francisco since the offseason began.
Early last week, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that a deal wasn't imminent between the two sides.
Over the weekend, Marco Martinez of the 49ers RedZone Podcast shared that he heard San Francisco had set a soft deadline of Saturday for a Samuel extension, but expected the 49ers to continue negotiations throughout the week if an agreement wasn't reached.
Moreover, Pelissero confirmed the report, sharing earlier this week that the two sides have continued negotiations, expressing more optimism ahead of training camp.
While the 49ers haven't reached an agreement yet, head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't worried about an extension, and believes that Samuel will be in San Francisco for years to come.
"I know they're working on it right now, our upstairs with John and Paraag, I know they've been through negotiations with Tory [Dandy], so that's something I know they've been doing [for] the last couple weeks. That's my time to really stay out of it. I think they'll get something done sooner than later, but there is no timeline I'm not really concerned about it right now, I think it's all going to work out."
On Tuesday, PFF's Doug Kyed reported that Samuel did indeed report to training camp, and on Wednesday, Shanahan confirmed that Samuel was in the building, but wouldn't participate in drills and would instead be conditioning on the side.
Samuel is essentially beginning his "hold-in", as Marco Martinez and I predicted Saturday, which likely continue until the two sides reach an agreement on a long-term extension.
