Hall of Fame quarterback turned ESPN analyst Steve Young recently discussed the 49ers' system and why he thinks it is the best place for a young quarterback.
The place where they are [number] one is innovation," Young told NBC Sports Bay Area. "Kyle's ability, week to week, to create, not a simple solution for a quarterback, but ... it allows all your athleticism and all your smarts to come out. This offense is what I would dream about playing in. And so, that's where it's a cut above everybody else, in my mind."
Another NFL quarterback turned analyst, Tony Romo, concurs with Young.
"I think anybody in the Kyle Shanahan [or] Sean McVay world is going to have a chance to succeed at the quarterback position," Romo said Wednesday on The Zach Gelb Show. "I think these guys allow your team to have advantages, so I think that's going to help a lot. Really, they run the football, set up these play-action passes that get people wide open, so you're always going to have at least two or three chunk plays that [other teams won't] get. And that's going to be 50 to 75 to 100 yards a game on stuff that comes from coaching. That's a bonus for Lance."
Most of those looking to be critical of Lance will point to his lack of playing time in 2021. However, Romo doesn't view that as a negative. Instead, the analyst believes Lance's rookie season was probably valuable for the young quarterback.
"I do think there's growing pains for any young quarterback," Romo said. "Him not playing too much too early, I think, is always beneficial when you can wait."
