Harris rejoined CBS Sports HQ to share his thoughts on two big 49ers-related offseason storylines—Deebo Samuel and Garoppolo.
Earlier this offseason, Samuel requested to be traded after watching several of his wide receiver peers cash in while the 49ers star waited for his own contract extension.
San Francisco had hoped to trade Garoppolo in March. However, the quarterback underwent shoulder surgery that month, halting all trade discussions. Now, the trade options have diminished, with several teams filling their quarterback needs.
Harris was asked about the relationship between the 49ers and the two players with training camp less than a month away.
"It's awkward," Harris said.
The analyst notes the 49ers' refusal to grant Samuel a trade and Garoppolo's inability to throw the football. Although, the quarterback should be medically cleared soon. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the quarterback hopes for a "quick resolution" to his situation once healthy.
Harris also questions whether or not Garoppolo's throws will have velocity and look good once he can start tossing the football.
"Again, you don't know what Deebo Samuel wants to do in your offense," Harris continued. "He's been clear he doesn't want to run the football. That was a big part of why they got to the NFC Championship Game last year. And you don't know what he's willing to do. So not only can Jimmy G not truly throw to him yet, but if you're Deebo Samuel, you don't know who you want to throw to you because you don't even know what plays you're willing to run.
"This is a messy situation getting worse, and I feel for the San Francisco 49ers fans. They've got enough great talent on that team. They should be competing for a championship this year."
