"So he was a guy we knew early that was our number one free agent we were going to go after and when you get through there and they haven't been drafted and we got the last pick," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on April 30. "We thought it was perfect. I mean, the guy has played a lot of football, plays the game the right way, is extremely tough, gets the ball to the right spot, plays very well in the pocket, and a guy who can come in here and help fill out this roster and give himself a chance to make a team."
Purdy completed 292-of-407 attempts (71.7 percent) for 3,188 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions through 13 game appearances as a senior in 2021, per Sports Reference. He completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 12,170 yards with 81 touchdowns and 33 interceptions through his four collegiate seasons.
Being the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft means carrying the label of "Mr. Irrelevant."
"From the outside, yeah, I guess it's a funny thing," Brock admitted to reporters after being drafted. "I'll embrace the role and have fun with it, for sure, but at the end of the day, I'm trying to help a team win a Super Bowl. That's where my mindset is at with it."
Thanks to the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which runs through the 2030 season, all rookie contracts are for a length of four years. First-round selections come with an option for a fifth year, which doesn't apply to any of the 49ers' nine draft selections.
The total value of Purdy's four-year contract is set to be $3,750,660, per OverTheCap.com. That includes a signing bonus of $90,660 and a 2022 salary-cap figure of $727,665.
Purdy is proud of the versatility he displayed in college.
"Yeah, I have never missed a game due to injury," Purdy shared. "There have been games where I've gotten hurt, and had to leave the game, but I've come back. That's something that I'm prideful in, being tough. I'm not a quitter. I try to play through injury for the guys on the field that I'm playing with. I think that is one of the strengths that I have as a player. I'm durable and I can take hits. I'm gritty and crafty in the way that I play. It is something that I have clearly shown in the past four years and something I can hang my hat on."
