49ers legend Bryant Young played on the defensive side of the football for 14 years, all with San Francisco. Young frustrated opposing quarterbacks during his illustrious career, bringing them down a team-record 89.5 times.
What advice does the soon-to-be Hall of Fame defender have for the 49ers' 22-year-old quarterback?
"He's a big kid," Young said Wednesday on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I got a chance to meet him at the 49ers Foundation event earlier in the year. Not only is he a big, athletic kid with a strong arm, but just a great personality, good character young man.
"For him, I would just say, 'Be very confident.' For me, when I walked up to the line, I knew my opponent in terms of the guys that I would battle with, one-on-one, offensive linemen-wise. I knew what I was up against facing that group. But when I had a confident quarterback coming up to the line of scrimmage, that's another problem.
"I would just say, 'Own it. Be confident. Trust the process. And just trust all the tools that are around you.' They're going to put him in a great position to win ball games and make incredible plays. He has the talent. I'm looking forward to it. He's going to have a bright future."
San Francisco made Lance the No. 3 overall pick in last year's draft, trading up to get him and using last season to develop the inexperienced player. It sounds like Young has no doubt that Lance will have a productive career.
