Following Shanahan's words, what should we expect at the quarterback position in 2022?
While the head coach didn't reveal his starter for 2022, continuing his style of secrecy, Shanahan raved about his rookie quarterback, sharing his belief that Lance would start sooner than later, along with the fact that Jimmy Garoppolo's shoulder surgery hindered the 49ers' plans as it caught the team by surprise.
Additionally, while Shanahan didn't try to reveal much about Lance during his time with reporters, he indirectly addressed the dual-threat quarterback when explaining the decision to hire quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.
"We thought it was neat to bring in somebody who could bring something a little bit different," Shanahan said. "We kind of have a partnership in there where we all can offer a little bit different stuff. I love that Trey has someone that has been through the battle. I can tell him about it and what I've seen with guys but someone who's actually had to go through the ups and downs and have pressures of having a good game, then throwing a pick that loses the next game, how to deal with the media, how to deal with the NFL season. I think it's hard to find a player always that's done it at such a high level that's willing to go through that commitment and stuff. Brian seems all on board. We've had him here for a month and he's been great."
As it seems, Griese was persuaded to join the organization for the sole purpose of having an experienced quarterback in Trey Lance's year, not Jimmy Garoppolo's.
The duo of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch also confirmed that Lance was working out with fellow quarterback Nate Sudfeld, who the 49ers signed to a one-year, $2 million deal, along with receiver Brandon Aiyuk in Southern California, once again, indicating the direction of the team moving forward.
