On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would undergo shoulder surgery, sidelining him for much of the summer. However, the team's plans to trade Garoppolo have not changed.

Of course, you have to worry about Garoppolo's trade value plummeting with news of impending surgery. However, Schefter added that the quarterback is garnering "significant" interest from multiple teams.


General manager John Lynch joined Good Morning Football from Indianapolis on Wednesday. Peter Schrager asked if the 49ers knew about Garoppolo needing shoulder surgery heading into the offseason.

"No, we didn't know it. And I don't think Jimmy knew it," Lynch responded. "I think he's made a decision here in the last couple of days. He had an injury in that Dallas game. He was dealing with a couple of things—his thumb, which, my goodness, my admiration, an avulsion fracture.

"Chris Paul [of the Phoenix Suns is out] six to eight weeks [with the injury], and Chris Paul is a stud too. But Jimmy, what he did, throwing a football and leading us through this playoff run was just tremendous, and did it with a couple of injuries."

As stated by Lynch, Garoppolo suffered the shoulder injury during the 49ers' Wild Card game against the Dallas Cowboys. He was already playing with a torn ligament in his thumb, suffered during Week 16. Garoppolo played through that injury during the team's impressive playoff run.

Schefter added that Garoppolo will not require surgery on his thumb, unlike the shoulder.


"The shoulder, I never like saying minor when someone is having surgery," Lynch continued, "but it's a capsule issue in the back of his shoulder that you can try to rehab, but if it doesn't get well, the rehab, then you go to the alternative route. And that's what they've decided to do. So, it's going to take some time, but he's going to be fine."

Lynch noted that nothing has changed regarding Garoppolo's roster status, confirming what Schefter reported—that teams are expressing interest.

The 49ers already have their Garoppolo successor. They traded up last offseason to select Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick.

"We're so fond of Jimmy, and that situation is active," Lynch added. "It's fluid. You're here, a lot of teams have interest in him. It's pretty obvious we put a lot into Trey Lance, and we're loving the development of Trey."
