San Francisco is preparing to play the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Saturday in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. The team is coming off a Sunday win against the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round, which means one less day of preparation for the Niners.
Breer also reports that the Minnesota Vikings will interview 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans on Wednesday. That too will be conducted virtually.
Kyle Shanahan hired McDaniel to his staff upon becoming the 49ers' head coach in 2017. McDaniel started as the team's run-game coordinator but was promoted to offensive coordinator on January 18, 2021.
McDaniel and Shanahan have been together for a long time. Before joining the 49ers, he was an offensive assistant under Shanahan, then an offensive coordinator, with the Atlanta Falcons. McDaniel also worked with Shanahan in Houston, Washington, and Cleveland. He served as an offensive assistant with the Texans, an offensive assistant and receivers coach in Washington, and a receivers coach with the Browns.
While Shanahan remains the 49ers' game-day play-caller, McDaniel plays a big part in creating each week's game plan.
The 49ers promoted Ryans to defensive coordinator on January 18, 2021, following the departure of Robert Saleh to the New York Jets. Ryans previously served as the team's linebackers coach from 2018-2020 and started his time on Shanahan's staff as a defensive quality control coach in 2017.
During the regular season, the 49ers defense ranked No. 3 in total yards allowed, No. 6 in passing yards allowed, No. 7 in rushing yards allowed, and No. 10 in points allowed.
