Video from Jane Slater of the NFL Network showed fans throwing objects from the stands as the officials and Cowboys players left the field. Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence can be seen deflecting one of the objects with his helmet.
Slater tweeted that the fan who sent her the video insisted that those who were throwing objects were focusing their ire at the players, but the video also makes it seem like officials were targeted as well. The Cowboys were attempting to come from behind to win the game on the final possession, but time expired on the game's last play when officials didn't have time to set the ball after Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott ran for a 17-yard gain.
Lawrence told reporters after the game that he felt the fans throwing objects were targeting officials.
"That s*** was aimed at the refs. … It had nothing to do with me," Lawrence said, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News
The loss was a tough one to swallow for the Cowboys organization, in addition to their fans. Much more was expected from the Cowboys in the postseason after winning the NFC East and finishing the regular season 12-5.
"When you get this combination of players together, you need to have success because we all know how it goes in the NFL," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters after the game. "The whole thing is set up to take away from the best and add to the ones that need improvement. And personnel-wise I think we had one of the best."
