"Evaluation of the knee in surgery confirmed suspicions that the ACL had chronic changes that would be best treated with ACL reconstruction," read a joint statement from the 49ers medical staff, Dr. Tim McAdams, and Dr. Neal ElAttrache. "This procedure gives him the best opportunity to make a full recovery and return to playing football in 2022."
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after Friday's practice. He was asked about the players' surgeries, the expected timeframe for their recoveries, and if a return at the start of the 2022 season is realistic.
"Yes, they both had their surgery," Shanahan said. "They both went real well. I would guess [they would be ready for] training camp, just the two injuries that both of them had."
That's good news considering that Kinlaw kept having setbacks with his injury. They plagued him through the offseason, training camp, and into this season. There was also some speculation surrounding the severity of McGlinchey's injury.
Next season, Kinlaw will be entering his third NFL year. McGlinchey will be in his fifth year.
