"I think it was like a Grade 1 quad strain," Shanahan said. "It happened ... I think it was the beginning of the fourth quarter. Maybe slightly at the end of the third."
Ward suffered his injury late during Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. Tavon Wilson replaced him. The 49ers were already without their other starting safety, Jaquiski Tartt. He was placed on injured reserve over the weekend due to a knee injury.
Shanahan added that running back Elijah Mitchell suffered a rib injury and will be limited this week. However, the coach didn't sound too concerned about the injury.
Safety Kai Nacua is dealing with a hamstring injury and will miss multiple weeks.
The 49ers will continue to manage tackle Trent Williams' (ankle, elbow) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel's (calf) injuries. That could mean one or both may be limited for practices this week.
