Jason Verrett had a poor track record when it came to staying healthy. Last season was just his second healthy campaign in six years. He suffered a torn ACL during Week 1.
The 49ers added veteran Josh Norman before the season and Dre Kirkpatrick after Verrett's injury. Norman is 33 and Kirkpatrick is 32.
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR this afternoon and was asked if he wished he had added more depth in the defensive backfield this offseason.
"I know it's easy after you've lost a couple for people to start thinking that [you didn't do enough]," Lynch said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "But you know? I think we fortified it with going out and getting a guy like Josh Norman, a guy like Dre Kirkpatrick."
San Francisco also drafted two cornerbacks — Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas. Lenoir has not played in the last three games and was inactive this past weekend. However, early on, he looked pretty good for a rookie. Thomas has nine defensive snaps this season, all coming in Week 1.
"You talk about the rookies, you're right," Lynch continued. "Lenoir was playing well early, and he's kind of going through the little rookie issues that rookies sometimes do in this league. And we're looking forward to getting him back out there, and at some point, getting Ambry out there as well.
"We believe in the guys that we have. We've just got to start getting it done."
