According to Samuel, the game-changing play resulted from a mistake. The receiver joined 95.7 The Game's Damon, Ratto & Kolsky show and explained.
"You know what's crazy?" Samuel said. "Not too many people know this, but I actually lined up wrong. I was supposed to be on the right side, and I ended up on the left, and we didn't have enough time on the clock for me to get back on the other side of the field. So we just went with the flow, and it just happened."
While the miscue could have messed up the initial intention of the play, Samuel explains that the adjustment wasn't as complicated as one might think.
"It's the same kind of route but the outside receivers, you go back and look at the play, we was kind of communicating before the ball was snapped, and Trent [Sherfield] being the pro that he is, he knew I lined up wrong, so he had to change his route. And he knew what the concept was, so we just made it happen."
That is some excellent improvisation by the 49ers receivers. However, given the result, Samuel didn't receive a poor grade from his coaches for the mistake.
"It would have been a minus if it wasn't a plus," Samuel said.
Samuel finished the day with 93 receiving yards on six catches and now has 282 receiving yards and a touchdown this season.
