"He ended up having a small chip on his finger, so he's going to be out about seven days," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters the day after the game.
This morning, Lance stepped onto the practice field without the splint around his index finger or a wrap surrounding his right hand. That would indicate that the rookie quarterback's recovery might be on schedule.
However, Lance still is not throwing in practice. He is holding onto the football during warmups, which is something he was not doing last week. Lance did not have a football in his hands during individual work, though.
The 49ers will obviously be cautious with the No. 3 overall pick and the team's quarterback of the future. There is no urgent need to get Lance ready for a game. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to start Week 1, even though Shanahan hasn't officially announced that.
"I mean, any time you've got a small chip, it could linger," Shanahan told reporters last week. "I hope it doesn't. I'm hoping he's back there next Monday. That's the goal. He seems positive about it. But we've got to be smart with it too."
Shanahan isn't scheduled to speak with reporters again until Wednesday.
There were a few jersey number updates this morning. The newest 49ers player, cornerback Josh Norman, will wear No. 26. His signing was first reported yesterday and officially announced by the team before practice. Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu has switched to No. 6, previously worn by punter Mitch Wishnowsky. Wishnowsky has switched to No. 18, previously worn by Sanu.
