The 49ers waived James on August 28, after the receiver suffered a knee injury. He is expected to miss about six weeks, per head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"It started bothering him yesterday in practice, so we shut him down halfway through practice, and I think he got the MRI this morning," Shanahan said last Friday. "(The name of the injury) started with an M. And I know six weeks. They said around six weeks, so I'm guessing."
James (5-9, 185) has appeared in 40 games with 10 starts, registering 38 receptions for 689 yards and three touchdowns in his three NFL seasons. San Francisco selected him in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The receiver also added 51 punt returns for 373 yards and 47 kickoff returns for 1,081 yards and one touchdown on special teams.
