Roster moves
The 49ers signed defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun and cornerback Alexander Myres to one-year deals and waived cornerback Mark Fields and offensive lineman Isaiah Williams.
Did not practice:
- LB Azeez Al-Shaair (knee)
- DL Arik Armstead (groin)
- DE Samson Ebukam (leg)
- LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (concussion)
- WR Jalen Hurd (undisclosed)
- S Tony Jefferson (hamstring)
- TE MyCole Pruitt (calf)
Several 49ers players worked on a side field with trainers, including safety Jaquiski Tartt, who is on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list. Tartt and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair were seen running and doing drills, creating some optimism that both may return soon. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Head coach Kyle Shanahan, however, does not expect Tartt to be close to a return.
"I don't know how long he's going to stay on PUP, but I don't see him coming back anytime soon right now," Shanahan said after practice. "... I don't see it as day-to-day right now."
Something new cropped up for Jalen Hurd this morning, but Shanahan didn't go into detail about why the wide receiver didn't practice.
"I know some things were bothering him today, so we were smart with him," Shanahan said. "Hopefully, he can get in a grove where he has a chance to go out there and play some football and give himself a chance to make this team."
Rookie Hype Machine
Today, it was undrafted rookie linebacker Elijah Sullivan's turn to fire up the fans before practice.
QB watch
The first completion of team drills was between Jimmy Garoppolo and wide receiver Trent Sherfield, who is having a nice training camp. The receiver celebrated with a flex. (San Francisco Chronicle)
Garoppolo tossed a nice completion to tight end George Kittle with an intentionally unblocked Arden Key closing in on the quarterback. Trey Lance also found Sherfield for a 34-yard gain during a move-the-ball drill. (KNBR)
Garoppolo was effective during the drills while Lance "faltered after that gain." Lance performed better during red-zone drills, going 5-for-5 with three touchdowns. Garoppolo was 1-for-3, including missing an open Deebo Samuel in the end zone. (KNBR)
During red-zone drills, the quarterbacks had six to eight seconds to try to get the offense into the end zone from the opposition's 10-yard line. Neither impressed Shanahan. One of Garoppolo's opportunities ended after cornerback Emmanuel Moseley intercepted the pass.
"I think that was our fourth-down play, and so it was kind of a last-play, last-chance," Garoppolo explained. "There was a tight window in there, but I just didn't fit it in. It's one of those live-and-learn practices, and don't do it in the game."
Maybe Josh Rosen saw reports that he had "taken a couple steps back" in practice. He threw a deep touchdown pass to wide receiver Austin Watkins during two-minute drills. (The Athletic)
Other notes
Training camp's first scuffles took place. The first was between defensive lineman Kevin Givens and guard Laken Tomlinson during one-on-one drills. The two had to be separated. The second? The same to participants after their next rep against each other. (KNBR)
The third—and seemingly minor—skirmish was between Linebacker Dre Greenlaw and rookie running back Elijah Mitchell. They, too, had to be separated. (Sacramento Bee)
During team drills, Tomlinson and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw got into a "minor shoving match" but never got out of hand. (The Athletic)
"My biggest thing is—I didn't see them all—but I hope no one threw a punch or anything," Shanahan said. "That's the big thing we go for. I expect guys to scuffle a little bit, especially when you're doing some blitz pickups. I heard it over there with some of the linebackers and backs, and I think it happens a little bit with the one-on-ones with the O-line and D-line."
The 49ers will take part in joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers next week in Southern California. It will be a nice change of scenery for the players.
"We're sick of going against each other," Shanahan added. "Got about one more week of it. Pumped to go to the Chargers next week and get to go against some new looks."
Defensive linemen D.J. Jones, Davin Bellamy, and Calhoun all earned would-be sacks during practice. Bellamy may have had two with Lance walking into the second during red-zone drills. (ESPN)
Linebacker Fred Warner was impressive. He was all over the field, was good in coverage, and had two pass breakups against wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Warner also had a good stop on Kittle, resulting in a short gain. (ESPN)
