Head coach Kyle Shanahan insists there is no quarterback competition brewing in Santa Clara. Jimmy Garoppolo is still slated to be the starter come Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
"What I told Jimmy right when we made the trade is, 'I don't know any rookie who can come and beat you out if you're playing at his best self,'" Shanahan told Peter King last week.
The 49ers drafted Trey Lance out of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick. The rookie is the quarterback of the future, but he is still finding his NFL footing and learning the offense. So far, he has looked good in training camp, but Shanahan insists that doesn't change the plan for the upcoming season.
"Jimmy's our starter because he's our best quarterback right now," Shanahan told NFL Network's Steve Mariucci this weekend. "And obviously, we think a lot of Trey, and that's why we invested what we did."
All eyes have been on the performances of Garoppolo and Lance, with most waiting to see if the rookie can somehow show enough flashes to warrant consideration for a competition between the two. For now, it has been Garoppolo working with the first-team offense and Lance working with the twos, as you would expect.
With that in mind, Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group has been keeping copious practice notes and logged the practice statistics for each quarterback. They are below.
Garoppolo: 39-of-62, 3 INT
Lance: 36-of-56, 1 INT
Two of Garoppolo's three interceptions came during Saturday's practice. The other came on Monday. Linebacker Fred Warner was the recipient of one on each day.
Lance's lone interception came on Monday, courtesy of linebacker Jonas Griffith.
