Practice started with rookie quarterback Trey Lance being tasked to fire up the crowd of fans.
Here is a look at some of the defensive line individual drills, courtesy of KNBR's Jake Hutchinson.
Beat writer Cam Inman sounds excited about one specific camp competition. No, it's not at quarterback. He is eager to see how wide receiver Deebo Samuel versus cornerback Jason Verrett continues to play out. (Bay Area News Group)
"These are two elite players who crave competition, and it shows each snap," wrote Inman. "It was a tight race Thursday, especially as they faced off in the final period of practice. When Samuel caught a Groppolo pass on an out route, Verrett claimed Samuel pushed off to create separation. A few Garoppolo throws later, Verrett broke up a Garoppolo pass toward Samuel."
Verrett reportedly ended up being one of the more impressive defenders during practice. On offense, Lance was part of the two best plays from the session. He sidestepped Kentavius Street and got a throw off to Samuel, who was going against rookie cornerback Ambry Thomas. Lance also completed a pass to wide receiver Travis Benjamin between two defenders. (NBC Sports Bay Area)
Samuel ended up hauling in five passes during practice.
As for the quarterbacks, both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance threw incompletions on their final three passes. Garoppolo finished the day 5-of-11 while Lance finished 7-of-12. Inman notes that Lance looked "smooth" in his progressions and had some nice completions during team drills. However, a deep pass 45 yards down the field to tight end Ross Dwelley fell incomplete. Defensive linemen Arik Armstead, Eddie Yarbrough, Anthony Zettel, and Jordan Willis all recorded at least one would-be sack. Defensive backs Marcell Harris, Jared Mayden, and Tim Harris all had pass breakups. (49ers.com)
Cornerback K'Waun Williams broke up a Jimmy Garoppolo pass intended for tight end George Kittle, firing up the defense. Tim Harris continued to fill in for Emmanuel Moseley opposite Verrett. Moseley is on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Defensive tackle Zach Kerr disrupted the offensive line a few times, including stopping rookie running back Trey Sermon on the first run play of practice. (Bay Area News Group)
"Nose tackle D.J. Jones has an impressive showing in one-on-one pass rush drills against Alex Mack and rookie Aaron Banks," wrote Matt Maiocco. "... The defense ended practice strong with a couple of plays against Garoppolo and the first-team offense. Armstead got pressure and Dontae Johnson broke up a pass for Mohamed Sanu. On the next play, (Samson) Ebukam got a good push with his pass rush and K'Waun Williams broke up a pass intended for George Kittle."
Personal note: I know players love the relaxed jersey number rules, but it's going to take some time for me to get used to seeing safety Jimmie Ward wearing No. 1 and Verrett wearing No. 2 during practices and games.
