Moore sustained the injury at practice on Monday, June 7. He was one of two 49ers players to suffer a serious injury during the Monday practice, along with offensive lineman Justin Skule (torn ACL). According to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Moore's injury was of the non-contact variety and took place with no other players in the vicinity.
"T-Moore hurt his Achilles on air. No one was by him, he backpedaled and he went to go break forward and it just gave out," Shanahan told reporters Wednesday.
Here's what Moore posted on Instagram regarding his surgery.
Moore is in his fourth season with the 49ers after being selected in Round 3 of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Southern Miss. He had yet to miss an NFL game before suffering his Achilles injury and totaled 100 tackles, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery with 13 career starts. Eight of those starts came during the 2020 season.
The 49ers now head towards training camp with a safety roster of Jimmie Ward, Jaquiski Tartt, Tavon Wilson, Tony Jefferson, Marcell Harris, Jared Mayden, Kai Nacua, and rookie Talanoa Hufanga. The recent injuries to Moore, Skule, and running back Jeff Wilson (knee) are the latest in what seems like a never-ending run of bad luck for the 49ers on the health front, but Shanahan doesn't plan on changing things too much in the near future just because of what happened over the past several days.
"We're always re-evaluating things and doing things like I'd say, you know, we change every year a little bit," Shanahan said Wednesday. "We always learn from stuff. But to sit and say we're going to do training camp differently because someone got hurt getting out of chair (Wilson), because someone got hurt on air and a person hurt his knee playing football would be pretty irresponsible of me and extremely reactionary. I just try to do what's right for guys and provide them football and we try to do it the safest way possible."
