In April, 49ers players joined those from other teams, saying that "many," at the advisement of the NFL Players Association, had opted to forgo in-person workouts due to continued concerns surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that more than 80 players arrived at the team's headquarters in Santa Clara this morning to start Phase Two of the offseason program. Organized team activities begin next week.
While the upcoming sessions are voluntary, it is worth noting that several 49ers players have bonuses linked to their participation in offseason workouts. Garoppolo leads the group with a $600,000 workout bonus. Five others — safety Jimmie Ward, guard Laken Tomlinson, tight end George Kittle, and defensive linemen Arik Armstead and Arden Key — have a $100,000 workout bonus in their contracts, per OverTheCap.com. Running back Raheem Mostert has a workout bonus of $50,000.
The 49ers held a three-day minicamp this past weekend, but it only included rookies, a few players with a year of experience, and some others who were trying out for the roster. Among those trying out was veteran wide receiver Marqise Lee, whom the team signed today.
