The 49ers signed Obi Melifonwu on January 4.
The then-Oakland Raiders made Melifonwu a second-round draft pick out of Connecticut in 2017. He appeared in seven games during his first two NFL seasons but has not played since 2018 while with the New England Patriots.
Melifonwu was part of the Patriots' Super Bowl LIII team that beat the Los Angeles Rams. The defender spent the 2019 season on New England's practice squad. He recorded 10 tackles during his first two NFL seasons.
